제가 이 영화의 광고를 처음 봤을 때, 분명히 <나니아 연대기>와 같은 판타지 영화라고 생각했습니다. 하지만 아니었죠. 이것은 제 잘못이 아닙니다. 그 누구라고 해도 그 광고만 보았다면 그렇게 생각했을 거에요. 저는 이 영화가 환상의 세계로 들어가는 두 소년 소녀에 관한 이야기라고 생각했었습니다. 그건 그렇게 보였어요.

사실인 즉, 이 영화는 판타지 무비이기보다는 일종의 성장담입니다. 괴짜라서 세상과 쉽게 어울리지 못하는 소년과 소녀가 서로만의 세계를 만들어가는 이야기이지요. 그들은 "테라베시아"를 창조하고 거기에서 머물려고 합니다. 이유인즉, 진짜 세계는 그들에게 그리 우호적이지 않거든요. 그들은 세상으로부터 도피하여 집 뒤편의 숲에서 거창한 소꿉놀이를 시작합니다. 

이 영화는 모범적인 성장담인 것도 아닙니다. 일급의 성장담은 아니지요. 제시가 시도하고 있는 것은 자신의 소외를 그저 아름답게 꾸미려고 하는 것 뿐이에요. 소녀가 죽었을 때 제시가 한 일이라고는 그녀의 죽음을 부정하고 새로운 짝을 만든 것 밖에 없어요. 여기 어디에 성장이 있단 말이에요?

그렇지만 이 영화가 성장담과 판타지 무비의 중간에 다리를 걸치고 있는 것은 분명한 장점입니다. 이 영화의 두가지 성격은 서로를 견제하고 보완해줘요. 어느 하나 완벽하지는 않지만 <테라베시아>는 그 가운데에서 비교적 정확히 균형을 맞추고 있어요. 이 영화는 소년의 이야기를 동화식의 모험담으로 만들지도 않고, 그들의 이야기를 차가운 현실의 차원으로 끌어내리지도 않습니다. 그 최종결과는 조금 모호하지만 그만큼 흥미롭죠. 저는 개인적으로 <미사고의 숲> 식으로 나아가도 괜찮았을 거라고 생각하지만... 뭐 큰 불만은 없습니다.

When I watched advertisement of this movie, I thought this movie would be some kind of fantasy movie just like “Nania”. But it wasn’t. But It wasn’t my fault. It seemed perfectly like fantasy movie. I guessed it would be a story which is about a boy and a girl who are going through fantasy world. No matter who you are, If you saw that scenes, you would have exactly same idea.

Anyway, It was not fantasy movie. It is some kind of initiative story. There were one boy, and one girl. They are weird. They were isolated from other people, they just played with each other and made a place to play. They imagined their world and almost created their world. They went into their own world because the real world is too unfriendly to them.

It isn’t good initiative movie. It is not just well class building story. It is about makes their isolation to beautiful. The boy never has got over everything what he faces.. When the girl died, he just denies it, and found people who replace her. It is not real growing up.

But it is a good thing this movie is not perfect Initiative movie and neither fantasy movie. That initiative side doesn’t let this movie be fantasy movie, and the other side does exactly same thing. Final result is little vague and interesting. We knew that world was not real but we expected it would be exist. Because fantasy is for adult. We wanted to see some surreal thing in childhood.
