저는 얼마전에 어학원 클래스를 IELTS 대비반으로 옮겼습니다. 우리나라에는 아이엘츠가 비교적 덜 알려지긴 했습니다만, 영국이나 유럽권, 또한 호주에서 영어 실력을 검증하는 대표적인 시험 입니다. 사실 저야 앞으로 한국으로 돌아갈테니 토플을 공부해야겠습니다만, 호주에는 토플을 가르치는 코스가 사실상 없기 때문에...

아이엘츠는 읽기, 쓰기, 듣기, 말하기 4대 영역의 능력을 평가하는 시험이기 때문에 수업도 꽤 다양한 방식으로 진행됩니다. 매일매일 일정 시간을 어휘, 작문, 듣기, 토론에 할애하는데 덕분에 가끔 산만한 느낌도 들어요. 이번 주 클래스의 주제는 "Education'입니다. 토론 및 작문 주제로는 교복 의무화를 다루었는데, 이 머나먼 이방 호주에서도 교복 착용을 둘러싼 이슈는 비슷비슷 하네요. 학생의 개성을 말살한다는 주장에서 시작해서 학교 내 빈부격차의 노출을 막아준다는 주장까지 얼마나 이리 똑같은 지. 폴란드나 헝가리 등 동구권에서 온 학생들도 내세우는 주장이나 그 근거가 크게 다르지 않습니다. 세상은 생각보다 훨씬 닮은 꼴이라고 느끼게 되요.

흐음...토론식 수업을 하다보면 답답할 때가 많습니다. 말은 따다다다 하는데 가만히 듣고 있자면 시제, 문법은 엉터리인 사람도 있고 아예 입을 한일자로 다물고 다소곳이 지켜보는 사람도 많고. 유럽에서 온 친구들의 경우 확실히 더 매끄러운 스피킹을 보여주긴 합니다만 절대수가 모자라요. 이곳 어학원은 일본인과 한국인들이 지배하고 있습니다. 상위 클래스로 갈 수록 그 비율이 떨어지긴 합니다만...

이곳 케언즈는 확실히 아들레이드보다 교육 환경의 질이 떨어지는 것 같습니다. 학원비가 비교적 싸긴 하지만, 교사들의 실력이나 학생들의 수준이 확실히 차이가 있어요. 이곳 어드밴스 클래스는 정확히 아들레이드의 어퍼-인터미디어트 정도에 대응할 것 같네요. 어퍼는 인터, 인터는 프리, 프리는 비기너. 이런 순서로. 확실히 큰 도시가 인프라 구축이 잘 되어있고, 그만큼 학생들도 몰리는가 봐요. 아들레이드는 교육도시의 이미지도 있으니 특히 그런 것일 수도 있구요. 

학원 생활도 이제 2주 남았습니다. 후우. 하나라도 더 배워서 나가야죠. 넉달 동안 죽어라 일만하며 바닥까지 떨어진 영어실력이 조금이나마 다시 살아나는 것 같아 안심입니다. 역시 일을 할 때는 일을 하고 공부를 할 때는 공부를 해야해요. 혹시라도 일하면서 영어 배운다는 생각에 워킹 홀리데이 생각하는 분 있으시면 그만두세요! 그거 다 유학원에서 돈 벌려고 치는 뻥이에요!

Since Louis Althusser published his great work “Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses”, we consider government department thoughtfully. In his idea, all the governments are not just public service but also practice of the system. The education, hospitality, mass media, and so on. They reproduce productive-relationship(as Marx’s term) of the system and make people follow orders undoubtingly.

In his theory, public educations are one of the most powerful device to control people. Students are taught about the ways of keeping this world, and educate system makes them what it wants them to be. As a diligent laborer, hetero sexual, sociable person. (Infact he insisted that the subject of these process is bourgeois class) We are educated what we not do, and what to do. Think about “Brave new world”that is not just a metaphor. We actually live in that kind of world.

There are lots of practice which controls students. And I do think the most powerful and dangerous one is giving identity to students as a member of school, society. Students learn how to be social units. They are raised to a nation, good worker, reliable partner. They are not raised to specific individual intelligence.

School uniforms are just an old fashion, but it is true that they are kind of ideologic political device. It shows united community. It looks very mono. It shows no differences between any students. It is a monster with a lot of face, but has just one voice.

In western cultures, this kind of ideas are already considered and reflected because of memories of fascism and a lot of totalitarianism. But in far east Asia, especially in Korea, It is still on. It lives. Because Korea is still developing country, and people do believe the important of being united. Sometimes they sacrifice huge things because of that belief. They punish students who does not wear the uniforms suitably. They insist that it is out of rules so they have to fix it. There are no respecting to students. They put students behind of uniform policy. It is so inhuman.

I know most people do not consider this things seriously because It does not look serious and they do not find anything wrong with value of being united. If there are a lot of people who just agree with that, the time to warn has just come. Look, and see. How wonderful is the brave new world we have ever lived.
